Old People Go UNH!

"I'm tired"... Just did a couple of hours work outside and I'm done in, as grandma used to say. We went to the pool this morning and as we were driving into the garage, I spied several things that needed my care in the garden. I figured that if things needed care in the front garden, there would be things go do all around the house. So, after lunch, I got into my gardening duds and headed out the door. The geraniums by the drive are starting to look a little shabby...so I went out and cut off all the dead things and watered them good. They look refreshed now and won't need anything until the end of the week. The knockout roses have so many dead roses on them. They say that you don't have to cut them off, but I don't like to look at dead blossoms....so I lopped them off. I cut down some more hosta stalks and tidied up Mary's Garden. I cleaned the bird bath and filled it then I stepped back and took a look. Not bad for just a little time spent. I meandered out to the deck and cut back the petunias and cut off some dead blooms. I had forgotten how sticky petunias can get. I don't like the way they cling to my hands as I work. I may not plant them next year. They take a lot of care in my stack and grow container. After I cut them back, I had to sweep around the planter. The geraniums last year were so much neater. The tomatoes needed watering, so I did that. I picked a couple of almost ripe ones and noticed that a couple of ripe ones have bites taken out of them. (Joe just came in from cutting down boxes to put in the recycle bin, he's complaining of being tired too. He said, "It feels like I just did 8 hrs. of work!)
This is what I don't like about growing older....just these few things make us tired. We eat well, get plenty of exercise, keep regular hours for sleep, drink a lot of water, reg. visits to Drs., take very few medications, have a fairly active social life, regular Church....we do everything right, as far as I know. I guess our bodies are changing and our attitudes have to change too. We can't expect to do what we once did. I used to work like wonder woman years ago. I don't expect to carry on like that, but heck...all I want is to be able to do a few jobs without having to grunt and moan. I used to hear older people go unh.....when they lifted themselves out of a chair. I vowed never to do that. Well, hear I go...getting out of my computer chair...unh!

Old Gardeners Say UNH!, by Balisha
I'm working in the garden..the day is very hot..
Some plants need some water and some do not.
Petunias need some trimming...they really look a mess..
I'm getting sort of tired...this I must confess.
I go to sit a while...on my porch that's in the shade..
People going by..... think I have it made.
My glass is full of water a slice of lemon too..
Some sweat runs off my nose...I loosen up my shoes.
I sit there for a while and watch the birds in flight..
I hope that no one visits...I really look a sight.
I really must get busy and do the work that's there..
But first I need to stand....UNH! as I get up from my chair.
My joints are aching that is true..I have no time for pain..
I finish up and go inside and say a prayer for rain :)

  1. I mowed this morning, which takes about 45 minutes and I was dripping and didn't even finish the last little bit. I needed to pick up two piles of weeds/vines first and was just too pooped to do that. I hibernated the rest of the day. I took a nap and am ready to go get horizontal with a book now at 7:45. I do get up around 5.

    1. I'm usually an early riser. I find that if I keep busy much of the day...I sleep well at night.

  2. Just keep at it now matter what you say while you move!!
Always something else to do in the garden when we think we're going to just do that one thing.

  3. I always say "it's the mileage" Balisha! I am the same way. Last night I awoke with my right leg aching and my back. I got up about 4:15 and took a couple of Aleve with milk. That helped a bunch!

    1. So glad you can find some help with Aleve. Sleep is so important.

  4. Oh, I love this post. John and I both grunt when we rise from sitting. We do a little yard work; then we sit!
    Have a good night.

    1. That UNH! sneaks up on you. You don't realize that you say it until one day when you do it in public.

  5. What a fun poem you wrote, Balisha. I have the same situation, I do less as time goes on. My husband and I are active but are slowing down.

    1. It's the same old story....we all think we are able to do many things until our bodies say HALT!

  6. It is very hard to sympathize with you when you have a person cracking up at your poem at the end! :)

  7. It is a great feeling to do those little tidying up jobs in the garden - but one thing always leads to another right? Take it easy today and enjoy your flowers looking all pretty and fresh :-)

    1. One thing does lead to another. I just thought of another post I could write about.
