Be Gentle With Yourselves

What could be more gentle than a kitten?

I wrote something to a  blogger, in a comment that I want to share, so I remember it. I sometimes sit here and read what people have shared....and think how busy women are at holiday time. Blogs seem to have a way of rushing us into decorating, shopping, wrapping, baking and so on. We end up feeling like we will never get finished and our hearts beat faster, we breathe faster, and we tense up.So many years, I have been sick at Christmas. All from over doing.  I decided to take it a little slower this year....well, for that matter I'm taking everything a bit slower :) It's worked out well for me.
Christmas plate on little shelf over the kitchen sink.

Some blogger friends have had surgery in the past month, some are dealing with loss, some have extra events like family weddings...and they are especially stressed with all the things that "need" to be done. My comment was, "Be extremely gentle with yourself this Christmas season."I had just read that on the internet that morning. It seemed so appropriate for that moment. I never paid attention to the Christmas plate on the shelf in my kitchen. It tells of the gentle season of Christmas. Gentle in nature and what I'm saying about our lives.
We find that we just can't do it all. Wonder women... we are not. We are not responsible for making everyone happy and making every one's Christmas perfect. We can't make a happy home if we aren't happy. Being gentle with one's self is perfect for this time of year. Take care of ourselves. Why not put ourselves first for a change? I don't think that's a selfish comment. It's hard, I know, with children depending on us. They will survive with a little less....and a happy relaxed mom. The family will survive by helping a stressed mom. Your husband will be happier with a relaxed wife.
Have you ever sat there in the light of the Christmas tree....when the meal is eaten and the presents opened and think to yourself.....is it over already? It was so much work and now it's over in a flash. The big Christmas let down comes at that time. Maybe your kids are in bed....hubby is snoring in his chair, even the dog and cat are napping, the candles are burning down to the last nub, the kitchen is a mess, wrapping paper on the carpet, and there you sit in a state of wonder. Not the joyous wonder of Christmas, but the wonder of "is that all there is?"
So, before we get to the actual day....maybe reading this will help some to slow down and only do the things that are going to be remembered. So many things could be let go. Be extremely gentle with yourselves this Christmas season. It only comes once a year.

  1. Balisha, this is a wonderful reminder to all of us! We need to slow down and enjoy these precious moments before they are gone forever! Today I did just that, my store is closed for the holiday and I am taking some time to just enjoy. Have a wonderful Christmas season me blog friend! :)

  2. I remember only gentle Christmas' through my life--of course when I had children that was 40+ years ago and they weren't frantic like the kids nowadays. Now that I'm not the "hub" at Christmas, I sit back and watch my kids and their kids and it is oh so wonderful!

    1. Times do get simpler now that the kids are grown. I see them rushing about and being frantic and I wish they could just relax and enjoy all they have.
      Merry Christmas to you, Judy.

  3. What a beautiful sentiment, Balisha. I didn't put up the usual 9 trees this year- i went for a less hectic season. I no longer feel the pressure to "perform" as I did when I was still blogging. I'm a happier person for it. 😀

    1. Hi,
I really miss your blog. I used to love it when you would go on trips to buy furniture...always bringing back ideas. I can't imagine 9 trees. I'm glad that you found peace after blogging. Hope your Christmas is happy, Sue.

  4. Great post Balisha!!! I was going to do a bigger tree, but went for the smaller one instead and a tiny one in the bedroom. I just didn't feel like all that work by myself. I am enjoying what I have done.

    1. I think that you must know what I am saying here. Not everyone is going to have the happiest Christmas. You have suffered a great loss.I admire you for just picking up and making the best of it. Holidays bring back so many memories of the past. It's best to just do what we can to make our holiday nice. I hope you have a blessed Christmas. I think of you often.

  5. Balisha, love this post and wish I had read years ago
when home was filled with children and a mate.

    1. I wish that someone had told me that I wasn't responsible for making "Christmas" for everyone. Moms are so overworked at this time of year. I know that sometimes I brought it on myself. Everything I do now.... is something that I "want' to do. It is so much simpler and I have found that my family wants me to enjoy the day too.
      Have a wonderful holiday,

  8. This year I started getting ready for Christmas earlier. I put up a small tree but missed one so much last year that I have really enjoyed having one again. I saved most of my other Christmas decorations and enjoyed getting them up. I bought very few gifts...mostly for the local great grandchildren and my daughter and son in law, and Marlene and Jeromy. I will just have my daughter and son-in-law this year unless my niece and her daughter can't go to Lincoln. Then there will be six of us. I have the free ham my grandson provided and will have a salad and mashed potatoes and a veggie and a pecan pie. ...a very simple meal.

    1. It sounds like a wonderful day for you. Simplifying Christmas a bit and remembering the real reason for Christmas, which seems to get forgotten in all the rush.

  9. Great words of wisdom. I really need to read this tonight. Here it is after 10:30 p.m. and I am absolutely exhausted. My son is home from school and so I like to "spoil" him a bit when he comes home but I've simply done too much today. I've been cooking and baking non-stop since last night. The dishwasher has gone through three cycles today! I've also kept up with the regular housework and have done two loads of laundry. I don't sleep well when Tim's home either, as he goes out to friend's houses at night and I can't truly sleep until he is home safe and sound - which is very late. So I will read for a bit now and then go to bed and try and get some sleep. God bless.

    1. I know how it is...when your kids come home you want them to have a wonderful time. I never slept well when mine were home either. Always listening for them to come in. I guess we never get over that. I hope that you take some time out for Melanie.
Merry Christmas to you and your family.

  11. I had to chuckle when I saw this title. My DIL is a mess after eye-surgery ( pain, etc. ) and I just sat down at the computer clicking on your blog with a bowl of home made hot baked rice pudding with a little cold milk to eat very very gently after major dental surgery yesterday. Been on a liquid diet for about a week now so this feels hearty, ha ha. More dental fun to come not long after Christmas. ANYWAY, needless to say our Christmas rush slowed down and the world won't end...the kids presents are already bought, dinner doesn't have to be as fancy, and no one feels like a bunch of cookie baking right now.

THere have been Christmases when I was younger and one of us or our kids fell ill with a flu or something and my sister and I were beside ourselves at someone having to miss the big day. I remember one where I was JUST getting over the flu, felt like hell and still cooked and had everyone over and they all got sick with the flu after! Was that worth it? Couldn't we just have delayed the dinner gathering for a week?

So I completely get what you are saying here :)
