Taking Care of Martha

I'd like you to meet "Martha" She's been sitting on my front porch for a couple of weeks. I brought her home, not knowing much about her needs. She is quite "needy" I have found. First of all....I've been calling her by the wrong family name. Martha isn't a true geranium...she's a pelargonium.  I figured that one this "regal" belonged in a pot of her own. A place of importance...for greeting guests when they come visiting. She likes to be kept damp...so she deserved my best plastic container. She must be in a container at least 8in across. She loves to spread out her toes (roots) in peat moss and vermiculite. Ahhhh, I could just hear her squeal with delight when I opened the special bag of Miracle Grow potting soil. She loves to eat.....a heavy feeder. You would never guess from the size of her slender stems. I feed the other "girls" once a month...but Martha likes to snack about every two weeks. She loves to adorn herself with beautiful blooms. She has a surprise for me...will she be dark pink or red?  When the day gets too hot....she likes to go to a shady spot and have a cool drink. She loves a shower....In the fall, she wants to come inside. She's been out on the porch greeting people all summer and now she needs her beauty rest, in a bright window. Oh, if I had only known she was so needy. I might have left her there in that drafty spot at the garden center. But she gave me that sad look and dropped a leaf right in front of my very eyes and begged....leaning out of her pot....take me home, Balisha....and I did.

    1. Thankyou Brenda. You do such a great job at introducing new blogs. Mine is a do over....I've blogged for years. It was time for some changes and blogger made that possible, by giving me some problems.
Have a nice weekend and thanks again.

  2. I do not do well with geraniums at all. This pelargonium is pretty. I like the leaves. The blooms look like they will have more pink in them. They will be lovely no matter red or pink.

Have a great weekend ~ FlowerLady

    1. I think the leaves are called picoteed leaves. I don't know if I'll bring it in this winter or not. It always sounds like a good idea and then I bring them in and lose patience with them as they drop leaves and look sparce. We'll see. I am thinking of a place for it now...

    1. I've admired these for quite a while. A friend of mine always bought a white one. She had very good luck with them. Hopefully it will grace my porch all summer.
Thanks for visiting. Brenda is so good to do this. I love her blog and have followed it seems forever.
      Come again,

    1. I've never had one...are they temperamental? I'm anxious to see if it responds to the same care that I give geraniums.
How are you feeling? Better I hope. Looking forward to reading about all the new changes in your life. Have a restful weekend.

    1. I'm hoping for a flush of blooms on this one. She cost more than a regular geranium and hopefully she will perform with pretty flowers. I understand that they tend to die out at the end of the season. Don't know much about them...so I'm learning.

  9. You've made me fall in love with Martha, too! I don't mind one or two needy plants...I think we all love to nurture something, maybe that's why we are gardeners!

Mantel can be spelled both ways so you weren't wrong in your comment. And thank you for the compliment. I have been planting pots and seeds and vines and veggie plants for days and have more to go...only because I love to sit and just drink in the beautiful air for a good while before getting back to "work"! The temps have been perfect. I have a way to go and many flowers to pot up and then the remainder will brighten my beds. I'm trying so many new things, so thank you very much for the advice on the trumpet vine. I've grown clematis and honeysuckle before so your words were very important to me.

I couldn't find your email address...no worries, I am trying to respond to comments by visiting blogs anyway...so much better than an email.

    Happy Weekend to you! :)

    XO,
    Jane

    1. We all need to take more time to enjoy our efforts in the garden. You have double work with your lake house too. It's nice when your husband takes an interest in the garden.

  10. Martha seems a bit proud, spoiled and complicated in her neediness, but then--perhaps she will put on a real show for you!

    1. She's called a Regal geranium sometimes. That's where she gets her lofty behavior.

  11. Hi Balisha..
I've been busy with life..but I'm glad I hopped over for a bit. I haven't had one of those lovely ladies for a long, long time..but I need a few of them for a corner of my yard. They really are a beautiful plant. SO happy you liked my summertime umbrella. It was fun making it and I am still working on it. Doilies are the answer. I am busy gathering some up and adding them..to make a patchwork. Winter will see it all come down. :) Have you seen the color "Geranium Green?" Daughter #2 painted her front door that color and it's gorgeous. I had never seen it before.
    Have a lovely weekend..
    Love,
    Mona

    1. I'll have to look up that paint color. Sounds interesting. Now, geranium red...I can understand that.
Love the easy way of living in your neck of the woods. You've made a little paradise on your patio.

  12. Martha is awesome. I usually have one but mine died over the winter. My neighbor has one and is making me a new plant from a cutting. It's funny, because I made the plant she's using from mine a few years ago. Keeping the plant going between the two of us.
