Felt Critters for April and Some Gardening

Here are the little critters that I worked on this month....a deer and a little scamp of a fox.  Notice how his little head is cocked to one side.....just thinking up mischief. I had a lot of fun doing these two. The deer is the hardest that I have done so far. The legs are so skinny and hard to work with. I ended up laying a line of glue down each leg to hold in place while I stitched.
I had some trouble linking up with the felt along party....I'll let you know later if things work out there.

I have lost many things in my gardens this past winter. Four rose bushes, 4 lavender plants....one that has been growing for 10 yrs. here, my sage plant that came with me from Hampshire and several other perennials like my many years old mums across the front. They are all on the same side of the house and received the same winds and cold. The 2 rose bushes in the back are fine. Everything that I planted by the new bird bath...late last year are gone. So, I have had to replace some things. No more roses will be planted. I ordered some bare root perennials and they came yesterday. With the coming rains....I knew that I had to get them in the ground right away. So, I worked for several hours clearing out the dead things and planting the new. The hardest part was getting rid of the rose bushes. I couldn't dig them out, so I just clipped away at them and had to leave the thickest stumps of branches at the bottoms of two of them. These (stumps) will be not so noticeable when I put my new focal point there. (my surprise) I put a few things in my big containers...just to hold, till I know where I want them.I finished just in time to get relax a bit and then get ready for Mass. Today, my body aches, but I have a feeling of accomplishment... doing this work. It won't look the same here this year. I always liked the roses and mums blooming together. The colors blended so well. Well, can't cry over spilled milk and it's on to maybe a new color scheme. Oranges, yellows, and blues...oh my! There will still be the pinks and lavenders...sounds like a mess. Isn't that what gardening is all about...trial and error? Joe will be happy with more color going on. I always loved the pinks and purples :(  I do have a surprise for the focal point in the front garden. I'll tell you later.
Stay tuned.

  1. I love your critters, especially the deer with his long legs and sweet face! I would love to do this but I think the cutting out would do me in.

I'm so sorry about your roses. Do you mind telling me which way they faced? I planted two rose bushes and a 4 year old hydrangea last summer and they face West and up against the house. So far no sign of them doing anything. I worked super hard today as you did yesterday trying to beat the rain. It still hasn't come! Ha! I got grass seed down...the front was easy with the spreader but the backyard I did by hand...lots of bare spots. And I planted the 65 bulbs that hubby bought me a few weeks ago, Actually the majority were Liatris and went in one large hole. All in all, it took me about 15 minutes. I really had a great time. I sat and read on the patio and they dogs frolicked. Now they are dead tired!! We'll see how sore I am tomorrow!

I want to say...you have such a good attitude about the plants you lost, so admirable, and I know the perennials will be spectacular! :)

    XO,
    Jane

    1. Hi Jane...My roses faced south. The evergreens in the front of the house (with south exposure) are all brown on the so. side...the roses are along the front too. I have noticed in our town....many evergreens are brown from wind and snow...most have a southern exposure. The winds were terrific coming from the southwest, We've been told that the evergreens will be OK, but other more tender things were lost. Our Church's roses are dead too...They are all Knockout Roses. You should see our town....everyone has a brown evergreen or two in their yard, it seems. It was a winter I'd like to forget. It doesn't pay to fret about these losses...just try to change. Our weather is certainly changing....we just have to adapt.
Sounds like you were busy too. We've been waiting for this weather, so we are anxious to start out...take care and don't overdo.

  2. Oh No! I am so sorry!! The Forsythias in this entire area are not blooming yet--can you believe that? They usually are flowered out by now and yet--nothing. I don't think I lost any perennials, but don't know for sure. Nothing is moving!!! Such a dreadful winter we had!

    1. As I told Jane...we have to adapt to our weather change. Last year was great for Forsythias. Mine is blooming right now. I think that things will be later this year. I'm trying to keep track of the hardy things that weathered "the storm" and if I replant....try not to repeat with the things that failed.
      Have a great day...Balisha

  3. Step one, survey a space for the garden and mark off the specific site. It is best to have the long side of the plot aligned with the sun, from east to west.kweektent compleet
