Picnics, Wildflowers and Dreams

Going to the pool this morning weather couldn't have been nicer. I had a thought swimming around in my mind, but I didn't tell Joe.
This picture is where the pelicans gather to fish...and so do humans. The river is low, but in years past this spot is a dangerous place to put a line in. Raging water swirling from the dam that is mostly under water from spring thaws.

My secret plan involved this basket and our favorite picnic spot.
The pool had to close because the filter was broken. We were so disappointed, but I thought that what I had planned would cheer us up.
I looked above and saw the sky changing. Storm clouds were gathering. What is this, my mind said. The weatherman didn't call for this kind of weather. It looked sunny on the other  side of the Rock River, but on our side it looked ominous. (I've used that word a lot this year)
I decided to spring my plan on to Joe. "How about a picnic?" I said. No reply. He often does this when I am formulating a plan. He knows it's no use putting his word in....yet. "I don't think it will rain....much." A few drops hit the windshield. "Looks sunny over there," I said hopefully. "Mmmmmmm fried chicken," his favorite. Rain is coming down pretty steady now and he turns on the wipers. "Darn, I had a picnic in mind," I said with a pout. Still no comment from Joe. Well, by now it it raining hard and the picnic plans are over.

We come into Byron and decide to just come on home. We'll have an indoor picnic. Later the mailman delivers a small box. I've been anxiously waiting for this. It's my wildflower seed collection from Vermont Wildflowers. I open it hurriedly and find that they have included some extra packets of seeds. I read the directions that I know so well....to scatter them just before the ground freezes and they will germinate in the spring. I begin to dream again only this time it's about wildflowers.

Oh, if my woods could only look like this. I found this picture and it's just about what I want for next year. (I can dream... can't I?"

While I'm dreaming, I can just see the two of us on a blanket, in the middle of this field of wildflowers, having our little picnic next summer :) Don't ask how we will get down on that blanket and better yet...how we will get up. It's a dream...remember?

  2. Balisha, I was following right along with you and your dreams...disappointed about your picnic, dreaming about your field of wildflowers...and then I got to the part about getting up and down off that blanket and I laughed out loud!!

My youngest daughter takes a weekly PE class for homeschoolers. Of course, most of the other mothers are 20-somethings and 30-somethings...and even a few 40-somethings. The last three weeks of the spring, the class was held in a different gym and there weren't any chairs for the mothers to sit in during the class. Many of those young things just sat down on that wooden floor! Not this mama! I might have been able to get down there, but getting back up would not have been pretty! And in front of all those young moms? No way! :)

On an entirely different note...thanks for participating in the discussion about blogging. It was helpful to hear what other bloggers had to say as I sifted through my own thoughts.

    1. Years ago, my mom couldn't get up off the floor without a struggle. I vowed to never be like that. Here I am today, looking the same way she did, when I get up off the floor. I love playing with the little ones, and do get down on the floor, but you're right...it's not pretty.

  3. LOL - it's a good dream! Best wishes with the flower seeds. Too bad about the pool problems and the rain. I know the picnic lunch was delicious, though.

  5. My wildflowers did pretty well for the first year - I'm going to order some more to fill in a little more. And some wild daffodils to plant in the woods. I love that company :-)
