Weekend Happenings

It's Sunday and we've had a busy weekend. We had a family funeral to attend and had to go back and forth to Elgin two days for that. Today is just relaxing after dropping off our daughter-in-law's birthday gift plus a dessert. I tried Ernestine's cheesecake and thought it was delicious. So easy to make. For the recipe go to     http://myjourneytomindfulness.blogspot.com/

A nice day...with rain during the night. The geraniums by the drive looked neglected yesterday...and I thought that I might have to water them today. The rain took care of that. When I mention watering...I have to think of the hardest working plant this year.

Sedum Autumn Joy is just now making a show. The plant is green, even during the winter. If you brush back the snow....you can see the little green rosettes, flat with the ground, never really dying back all the way. It starts growing in the cool spring. It grows and grows all throughout the year. Finally, in the fall, the pretty pinkish flowers appear. They make very pretty bouquets for in the house. They turn to a dark burgundy and can be left for winter interest in the snow. I have them in several places in the yard. I just simply put a spade to the plant and divide it. It will survive any way you do it. I like it because it always looks tidy and not bedraggled like so many others and seldom needs watering.
I'm not the only one who likes it.....the bees love it. One cold day last week, I noticed five bees on one plant. It was like they were frozen in time. I even touched one and it hardly moved. Later, when it warmed up, they all took off. All week I've been watching...bees galore and butterflies visit this flower. This is a wonderful plant....bringing bees and butterflies to the garden.
I'm going to leave now and have some dinner. Easy, peasy, dinner Marie's lasagna from the freezer.
Have a nice evening,
Balisha

  1. Is that plant also called "Live Forever?" We have some and they seem to hug the ground more than your plant does! I enjoy them all winter too.

    1. I learned something new today.....it is the same plant. I have never heard that...so I checked it out online. They can grow up to 2 ft tall. These are such easy plants to grow. I love them. Thanks for your comment.....so I could learn something new today.

    2. And so did I! I originally thought it was a hen and chicks but my friend told me that was a different plant entirely. I'm not very good at identifying anything my mom didn't have in her garden/yard!

  2. How pretty! You work so hard to make your yard so pretty.

    1. It's getting harder to keep things up. That's why I'm moving plants like this sedum...and filling in where fussier plants used to grow.....like roses. Thanks for the compliment.

  3. The cheesecake looks so good.
I love sedum too but we don't have any at our new home yet. I do remember how the bees loved the tiny flowers.
Hope you have a restful evening.

    1. The cheesecake isn't like a reg. cheesecake. It's made with a cake mix...in case you didn't go to the recipe. I used a stick of butter instead of margarine...so it's extra rich.
Maybe you will put sedum on your list of things for your new home.

  4. Sorry to hear that your weekend included a family funeral. I love the sedum in my butterfly garden - it has really taken off and spread quite a bit. I'm going to do as you said and divide it up and plant more elsewhere. Such an easy plant...like hostas, low maintenance!

    1. Sedum is the plant for a butterfly garden. I hadn't seen very many bees and butterflies this year until now. The plants are buzzing with them. They are so easy to divide. I once forgot a couple, when I was dividing and they laid there for a couple of days...out of the dirt. They were found, planted and did well.

  5. You seem to be making my garden work load more. Everytime you post a new plant, I think, "Oh. I want to plant that next spring." I may have to dig up more garden space, LOL. I've heard it called Live Forever.

Lovely weather here by the woods - 52 this morning.
My weekend was wonderful with my daughter from Tampa and soninlaw and my grandson from Washington, DC.
    I miss family so much

    1. That Cheesecake was so simple to make and tasted so good. I can imagine all kinds of toppings.
So happy to hear that you had a nice visit with family. Also glad to hear that it is cooling off for you. We are coming into the first week of fall and near perfect weather ahead.
I think that we, of a certain age, hope that we can stay in our own homes. That's why we need to keep things simple to lessen our work load. Cutting back where we can and finding time to rest.

    1. It seems that many of us want to have what "Grandma" had in her garden. I think that cottage gardens lend themselves to the old fashioned flowers that we often love.

  8. Keep checking for an update
    and hoping all is well.
    Another busy day
    and I wonder
what in the world do I do all day (it is nothing like the past)
Just moving dirt, clipping, picking up small limbs for fire when little girls arrive for Fall Break.
Phone calls, computer and day has ended :(
