Spring Things

My little garden gnome is looking bewildered today. "What's going on with this weather?" he seems to say. First it's cold now this 80 degree stuff. We just have to roll with the punches that Mother Nature sends our way. He looks like he's taking life easy, while I'm running around like a chicken with my head cut off...trying to keep up with it all. I just took several winter coats out of the closets and will find a place for them downstairs. Some of them should be given away....ahem....Joe. Coats seem to multiply at our house. A coat is something hard to give away. We always think that maybe it will come back in style, or maybe we will fit into it again. They are quite costly and I guess that's the reason we hang on to them.

Meanwhile out back it seems that nature is multiplying. Just look at those Lily of the Valley. They keep pretty much contained in this little area. I need to thin them out and give some away.
Things are multiplying in the front yard too. I just planted this "hen." Look at the little babies just popping out all over her. This is the very expensive one that I just bought. Will I have problems dividing this one and giving some away?
This last picture is one that was really hard to take. We were eating dinner, and were watching the bird feeder at the same time. Goldfinches just filled the feeder. I think that there were as many as 7 at one time. Joe encouraged me to get my camera. I thought that they would be gone by the time I got back. We've never had so many goldfinches as this year. I can hear them right now...out at our feeder in the back and I see a little fellow here in the front feeder. What is the reason for this bird multiplying so this year? We are feeding them the same sunflower seeds.....and they do love them. I can't imagine this many nesting close by. Birds seem to like their own territory for their nest. I'll have do do some research  on this.

There are 14 goldfinches at my feeder right now.

Spring, by Balisha

Multiplication in my yard.. is interesting to me..
I look and find it everywhere, it's even with the bees.
I see it in the birds...there never were so many..
They show up everyday.. just like a copper penny.
The hens are having chicks you know..close to Mom they like to be..
I gave them extra room to grow....it suits them to a T.
I notice something in the air...something I know so well.
The lily of the valleys with their delicious smell..
It's all the way it's supposed to be.. when spring arrives each year..
Enjoy it now for when it's gone... we all will shed a tear.
Spring is here...the bird song tells, in the pond the peepers sing ..
Your senses tell you to enjoy....this oh, so pretty spring.

I'm going to get ready and go out to enjoy the day. Rain is predicted for tonight.

  1. My lily of the valley are coming up great this year after barely any blooms last year - I think they loved the snow cover :-)

  2. We had storms the other evening and I was down at my son's house. When I got back and the rain had stopped there were 7 or 8 finches at my feeder. The thing is...I know the males are colorful and the females are duller....but some of the dull ones are so much smaller...perhaps we have mom and pop + young children finches?

  3. Do you think that they have baby birds already? Maybe they are the new offspring. I don't see them feeding each other. I have so many here right now...I think you might be right.

    1. Thanks, Margie. I have a hard time taking pictures of the birds. They are so quick to leave.

  5. I agree that this weather is crazy! One day it's cold, the next it's hot and humid. Rain on and off all the time - very unpredictable. Funny you should mention the goldfinches. I hadn't seen them around here in years and now all of a sudden, there's been several at my bird feeder, too!

    1. We had so many here yesterday. I'm trying to decide if Deb is right about some of them being their young.

  6. I enjoyed your poem, Spring.

Your little gnome really has personality. When I was a child our neighbors had a concrete gnome in their yard. It always creeped me out. Yours looks sweet. Your yard is really showing the signs of spring. That was a fantastic picture of the sweet finches. They are so bright and colorful. Little bits of sunshine.

I went out to visit my roses today and found holes in my knockout rose leaves. When I turned the leaves over to see what was there, I found little green caterpillars. I've never seen them around here before. I googled them, so far I found one gardener who said to pick them off of the plants, not to spray with anything. It would take me a hundred years to pick all of those caterpillars off of the leaves. I am going to investigate further to find if there is some kind of spray that I can use to kill them that won't hurt the bees or hummingbirds, or any other birds for that matter. During the Japanese Beetle year I kept those at bay with a pyrethrin water based flea spray. I didn't see any bees or hummingbirds declining. Do you know anything safe for the birds and bees that may kill these caterpillars?

    1. I hope you find something to control your bug problem. So sad to grow a plant like roses and have an insect destroy it. I've had problems with Japanese Beetles in the past. Now, I try to find plants that they don't like. The gnome was a gift from my daughter. I think he's kind of cute and when I did the side garden for the kids next door to enjoy....that's where he went.

  7. Way too hot for me today--86. The rest of this week and into next it is "supposed" to be a real nice 70ish. My kind of temperature!!! I too have a lot of Finches--Gold and House and even my white headed one is still around. I think the birds are as happy to see spring as we are!!!

    1. I remember you writing about that white headed one. I think that many birds come back to the same yards as the past year.

  8. Your poems are just wonderful...I don't know if they were written in the past or currently but I just love them.

I think your flower bed is just great...it's hard to tell if something is going to spread like wildfire but unless you need the space, I say let it go!!

    Jane

    1. My poems are written as I sit here. None of them were written even an hour before I start to put my post up. I could never rhyme words until after my Dad died. He used to write poems for all celebrations in our family. Once, I tried to write a poem for his birthday and couldn't. Now, most of my poems take about 15 min. to write.

  9. Your Lily of the Valley is growing gangbusters! I need to plant some along the woods and let them run. I love the poem. I adored hearing the peepers in the spring when we lived along the creek. Up here on the hill you may get lucky and hear them down along the holler. The weather did change over night but I am not going to complain even if the weeds were getting ahead of me. LOL! Happy Momma's Day to you!
